The first-phase release of SEW-Eurodrive’s X series sees eight models made available, with larger sizes to follow in 2008.
This initial X series release is available now and offered in a range of mounting arrangements and configuration options.
The ‘big brother’ of SEW-Eurodrive’s MC Compact industrial gear units, the X series features helical and helical-bevel gear
technologies that deliver torques from 58,000 to 175,000Nm. This makes it ideal for mining applications, such as conveyors
and stacker/reclaimer bucket loaders, as well as apron feeders and ship loaders.
According to SEW-Eurodrive national product manager industrial gear units, Ian Tribe, the X series’ comprehensive torque-rating
options simplifies the task of matching the industrial gear unit to the drive application. “The Australian mining operations
are now able to select a short delivery industrial gear unit that is effectively tailored to their drive application,” he
said.
“With competing gear unit manufacturers offering fewer gear unit models and torque ratings, users often have no choice but
to select an oversized unit to accommodate their drive application,” said Tribe. “An oversized gear unit generally means an
oversized unit weight, installation space and capital expenditure. “The X series allows users to obtain the ‘best fit’ gear
unit solution and avoid unnecessary up-sizing, saving time, cost and space.
All members of the new SEW-Eurodrive X series feature a revolutionary housing that allows the gear units to be inverted. “The
X series can be ‘flipped over’ to transform a left-handed unit into a right-handed one,” said Tribe. “This means mine-sites
can reduce the number of complete gear unit spares kept on site, and avoid time-consuming off-site re-builds, which are often
required to achieve the same result.”
The entire X series is 100 per cent SEW-Eurodrive-designed with all parts manufactured in-house. It boasts a modular design
and is assembled from a range of standard components. Further flexibility is achieved via the X series’ ingenious internal
component design--only a handful of standard multifunctional internal components, are required to build all models. The modularity
of the X series allows shortened delivery times, as units are assembled from stock parts. This component commonality allows
users with multiple X series gear units to minimise spare parts inventory.
All X series internal gearing, both helical and bevel, feature a ground finish to ISO quality level 6. The ground finish process
produces components with advanced fatigue strength properties and heightened resistance against breakage. It also allows the
X series units to run quiet--a real benefit on noisy mine sites.
An optional advanced fan design allows the X series to maximise its overall operating efficiency. Typical fan covers employed
by other gear unit assemblies usually sit flush against the input coupling, and risk obstructing intake air flow. The X series’
fan features a conical-shaped fan cover with the air intake grill positioned on the side faces to maximise air flow.
“The introduction of the X series builds on our already extensive range of industrial gear unit solutions,” said Tribe “SEW-Eurodrive
prides itself in being able to provide the Australian mining/minerals processing sector with the country’s most comprehensive
selection of industrial gear units.”
